Custom Rifles

Alberta Tactical
specializes in building extremely accurate custom target rifles,
hunting rifles and long range rifles. We have
built rifles in every calibre from .204 Ruger
to 20mm Lahti. We guaranty at least 1/2
MOA accuracy out of every custom rifle with match
ammunition. We choose only the best components for
our custom rifles and can build nearly anything.
Each rifle is custom built to fit the customer and the
customer's needs and desires.

Actions:
The action is the heart of any rifle and they can vary from an
accurized factory unit to a full custom model. We manufacture
our own actions in house and can import actions
made by Stiller, Defiance, Dakota, Surgeon and BAT as well
as factory Remington 700 actions if required.
Factory actions, such as the Remington 700, are fully
accurized as part of a custom build. This includes
straightening the front of the action and lapping the
bolt lugs to full contact and centering the barrel tenon
threads. Custom actions are often the better
choice because they are made to more exacting dimensions
and are available in
various configurations not available in a factory
action. For example a right bolt, left port for
bench shooting. Custom actions come in
stainless steel and chrome moly steel depending on the
customer's preference.

Barrels:
The best action in
the world will not produce an accurate rifle
without a good barrel. Typically we use Rock
Creek, Lilja and Broughton stainless steel barrels in
our custom rifles. Both manufacturers have an excellent reputation for building top
of the line accurate barrels. Barrels can be ordered
with twist rates and contours to fit
the shooter's needs and the typical bullet being used. We
have experience with a great variety of catridges and are
happy to suggest barrel contour and twist rates to those
treading new ground.
Most of
the barrels we
sell are stainless steel because it is harder wearing
than typical chromoly steel and so allows a longer
barrel life. Stainless can be left naked in a
satin bead blasted finish, polished stainless
finish or it can be Cerakoted to fit any colour
or camoflage
scheme.

Stocks:
The most common stock requested
for custom rifle builds
is the McMillan A5. We try and maintain
a number of these stocks in varous configurations, however custom
configurations and colour schemes may be
ordered. We also have access to HS Precision, Bell&Carlson,
Manners and Accuracy Intl AICS.

Many
customers choose stocks with adjustable butt plates and
combs so the rifle can be easily tailored to fit them
exactly. This is the essence of the custom gun, a
rifle that fits you perfectly.
Piller
bedding and free-floating the barrel are
performed as part of every custom rifle.
Bedding a factory rifle is normally the very first thing
we recommend when looking for accuracy.

Bottom Metal / Magazine
Systems:
Unhappy with the current
offerings of detachable
magazine systems we decided to build our
own. CNC machined from 7075 aircraft grade aluminum and
mil-spec hard annodized, we feel this bottom
metal magazine system is the best available on the
market. The magazine well is CNC machined to a
close tolerance to minimize magazine rattle yet allow
the magazine to drop freely. This system uses
commonly available Accuracy Intl magazines.
We also carry detachable bottom
metal from HS Precision, Seekins Precision, Badger and
V-Bull.
Most magazine systems require custom
fitting
to the action and stock to ensure proper
fit and perfect
functioning.

Triggers:
To the shooter, one of the most
obvious differences between a factory rifle and a
custom rifle is the trigger. This is where the
shooter interfaces with the rifle and a sloppy, heavy trigger offers
no joy. Factory triggers are built to avoid litigation and
can only be adjusted so far safely. An
aftermarket trigger can be safely adjusted down to only a
few ounces which makes a huge difference
when shooting for the ultimate accuracy.
We can
offer Jewel, Timney
and Shilen
triggers for the Remington 700 type actions, Mausers
and Winchesters.

Optics
Mounts:
Solidly mounted optics
are a must
when building a custom rifle. They can save the day
from a dropped rifle out in the field and maintain a solid
zero on accurate target rifles. Here we decided
we could do better than the current offerings so we
made our own. CNC'd from 17-4 stainless steel our
bases are a step above the mild steel offerings of
others. Machined to closely match the contour
of the Remington 700 action these bases are a
true Picatinny (1913) rail and will fit the action much more
accurately than anything else on the market.
Our bases come standard with a 20 MOA cant for extended
range shooting.
We also carry Nightforce rails for Remington rifles as
well as Warne rails for Savage
rifles.
We use only TPS and Nightforce rings for
maximum rigidity and
strength.

Paint &
Metal Finishing:
The final
touch in making a custom rifle your rifle is the colour
scheme. From basic black
to full custom camouflage, we can provide almost anything
the customer requests. Paint schemes are usually hand
painted Cerakote. Cerakote is an exceptionally tough
baked-on ceramic "paint" that is available in
many colours. Below is a custom
one-off multi-colour camouflage paint scheme requested by a
customer.

Building a Rifle:
Each custom rifle starts with top quality
components. How those components are assembled makes the
difference between a good rifle and a great rifle.
Alberta Tactical combines decades of practical gun
making experience with the best modern machining
technology in order to build the best rifle we
can.
We utilize
3-D computer aided design
software to produce detailed engineering blueprints of every
part before a tool ever touches metal. Then we
hand fit parts together to ensure they fit as closely
as possible. This is the best of both worlds,
where technology meets craftsmanship in order to
produce a superior rifle.

We
cut our chambers to minimum headspace for maximum
accuracy. Then the chamber is hand polished to
ensure the smoothest possible finish for
reliability. Each barrel is hand machined on a
manual lathe to ensure the parts fit together
with the tighest tolerances.

The following picture is the
best illustration of what separates a custom rifle
from a factory rifle. The top chamber is from a
factory rifle. Note the rough, unpolished chamber
showing tooling marks from a dull reamer. As well,
the corners of the shoulder are not sharp or distinct
but are rounded. The bottom chamber is an ATRS
custom barrel. The hand polished chamber is bright
and shiny, showing no evidence of tooling marks or
gouges. The corners of the shoulder are sharp and
distinct because the reamer used was not old and
worn.

Muzzle
brakes are another area where technology meets
craftsmanship. Each brake is hand fitted to the
barrel to ensure a clean, tight
fit. Then the ports are CNC
machined to make them perfectly perpendicular to
the action.

We stock many shooting accessories for the
serious
shooter.
